Trafficking Statistics

  • Human trafficking is a 32 billion dollar/year industry worldwide
  • The average age of entry into the commercial sex industry is the early teens
  • Human trafficking is one of the most profitable businesses for organized crime, second only to drug trafficking
  • Between 600-800,000 people are trafficked across international borders each year, 70% of whom are trafficked into the sex industry
  • An estimated 100,000-300,000 youth are sexually exploited in the US

Indicators of Trafficking

  • History of running away from home
  • Dishonest about age
  • Refers to older boyfriend
  • Scripted, restricted or vague speech
  • Tattoos of traffickers name or symbol
  • Psychological trauma symptoms
  • Excessive unexplained valuables
  • Carries hotel keys
  • Disorientation
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Lack of identification
